‘We are not the problem’: Protesters disrupt Ann Arbor school board meeting to advocate for educators

Educators are affected by $25M budget cuts

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Protestors have stormed inside a school board meeting in Ann Arbor to ensure their voices were heard.

Teachers, students, and community members organized and shared their message of supporting educators outside Ann Arbor Huron High School on Wednesday (May 8) while demanding more information from the school board when they abruptly found themselves inside the building during the meeting.

Educators are deeply affected by the administrators’ explanation of the budget cuts, which amounted to around $25 million to meet fund requirements back in April, were moved to protest on Wednesday.

To address the shortfall, the district is cutting administrative staffing positions and making other reductions at the central office.
