TRENTON, Mich. – Of the 13 communities deemed “Trail Towns” in the state of Michigan, only three are located in Metro Detroit.

Trenton, a Downriver city, has been recognized as having some of the best hiking and biking trail experiences in the state, while also promoting healthy lifestyles and local businesses. Designated a Trail Town in 2021, Trenton is particularly highlighted for its “gateway to the only International Wildlife Refuge in North America and connection to the Downriver Linked Greenways, part of the statewide Iron Belle Trail,” the state’s website says.

To be considered a Trail Town, a community reportedly must meet certain criteria required by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, which includes collaborating with businesses, schools, trails and the community. Officials tell Local 4 that Trenton hosts several events throughout the year that help promote the waterfront city’s outdoor spaces.

The two other Michigan Trail Towns located in Southeast Michigan are the city of Chelsea in Washtenaw County, and Orion Township in Oakland County. Here are the other Trail Towns in Michigan:

  • Big Rapids
  • Cadillac
  • Charlevoix
  • Cheboygan
  • Elk Rapids
  • Houghton
  • Newberry
  • Reed City
  • South Haven
  • St. Ignace
