DETROIT – Local 4 has seen the city of Detroit trying to boost housing options, community-by-community, and neighborhood-by-neighborhood.
On Thursday (May 9), our cameras were there for a ribbon-cutting in Detroit’s East Village.
A company called Greatwater Homes plans to develop 23 houses in various styles and floor plans.
Longtime residents welcomed the project, and one of the developers grew up one block over, making the project very personal.
For years, it’s been an area desperate for re-development, and from the looks of it, the tide is starting to turn.
A lot of East Village looks empty, but soon, those homes will be everywhere.
“We’re very excited to be part of a community that’s already established but is willing to grow and welcome us with open arms,” said Brandon Liggins.
Brandon and Nicole Liggins are two new homeowners who are proud to be moving into the East Village neighborhood.
“I actually was not eager to come to view this house at first,” said Nicole. “I walked in the house and absolutely loved it.”
It’s all part of a new development by Greatwater Homes to revive the area.
Delores Orr, the vice president of the East Village Association, remembers when there were homes everywhere—something that’s quite the opposite on Thursday.
“It was so many children,” said Orr. “Everybody had somebody to be with. You knew every family on the block. I can’t tell you from one house to another who lived there because we all were family.”
Because dozens of lots are available in the area, there’s tons of growth potential.
“We’re starting with 23 home sites here on Fischer Street,” said Jed Howbert of Greatwater Homes.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan called it an excellent opportunity for anyone who wants to live in the city.
“I always felt like the day would come when we’d see new single-family homes built here,” said Duggan.
The homes are priced anywhere from $300,000 to $400,000.
