Firefighters were able to rescue the woman from the building but she was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other occupants in the apartment.

Officials said there had been a small explosion in the apartment before the fire but that the building’s natural gas system was not involved. Hallway sprinkler systems and fire alarms were activated.

The fire was extinguished quickly, but eight other apartments suffered smoke and water damage.

An occupant in a different apartment on the second floor had to be rescued but was uninjured. No other injuries were reported.

Bakers Commons is owned by the Ann Arbor Housing Commission and offers affordable housing to those utilizing housing voucher programs.

The commission is helping residents displaced by Monday’s fire.

Ann Arbor Fire Department was supported by other local fire departments to cover the city while it put out the fire.

The Standard at Ann Arbor, at 405 S. Main St., offered its lobby residents, and buses were provided by the University of Michigan Logistics, Transportation, and Parking, officials said.
