ANN ARBOR, Mich. – It’s bittersweet to say ‘hello’ to a new business when it means waving ‘goodbye’ to a different one, but that’s what fans of The Bar at 327 Braun Court will have to do in May.

The neighborhood bar and comfortable third space has been operating since late 2011, but will permanently close on Saturday, May 11.

On Sunday, April 14, owner Eric Farrell said that the past 18 months have been complicated, professionally and personally, and that it was time to switch gears.

“There are no words that can express the gratitude I feel for the support over the last 12 1/2 years. We defied the industry odds (with a lot of help along the way), particularly for an independent owner-operated businesses. That leaves me proud, thankful, and more than a little bit emotional,” he wrote on Instagram.

Customers of the bar may see limited offerings at the bar as time creeps closer to its closing but a message on Instagram encourages visits and to have fun with the staff.

Farrell plans to focus on his ice cream venture, Cold Comfort, which debuted at The Bar at 327 Braun Court.

The plan is to sell wholesale ice cream at first but to expand offerings after moving into a Ypsilanti space at 10 N. Washington St. with Beara Bakes.

“Eventually we hope to have a little walk up window so we can see your faces,” he wrote.

The Bar at Braun Court is one of the last remaining businesses in Braun Court. The spot previously held Aut Bar and the Common Language bookstore, among others.
