ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Residents are being warned to be wary of phone scams after receiving reports of people impersonating officers and demanding money or gift cards.
Police officials said on social media that caller ID shows the calling number as being from Ann Arbor Police Department and say the number was spoofed.

Spoofing is when a caller disguises their number or identity by changing the caller ID information in an attempt to steal personal information or money, according to the Federal Communications Commission.
“Police departments will never call you on the phone demanding money to resolve any legal issue or ask for money period. This is not a new scam but when they occur, they usually come in waves, and we want the public to be aware,” Ann Arbor police wrote.
Anyone who receives a suspicious call should hang up right away and call the Ann Arbor Police Department at 734-794-6920.
