General Motors launches new Chevy Spark 'minicar' in US

Chevrolet Spark is smallest car GM will sell in US

DETROIT – There has never been a Chevrolet like the 2013 Spark.

The tiny "A" Class car is now on sale in the U.S. after being sold around the world since 2009.

The Spark is a foot shorter and eight inches narrower than the popular Chevrolet Cruze compact.

With a composite rating of 34 miles per gallon, GM says the Spark offers the lowest annual gas cost.

The Spark is not stripped. Standard features include air conditioning, power windows, OnStar, Stabilitrack, a 7-inch color touchscreen and full phone connectivity.

In an effort to appeal to younger buyers, GM will not advertise the Spark on television , but is launching the car online.

GM Engineering Chief Jim Federico said the engineering that has gone into the Korean-built Spark makes it a value.

"This is anywhere from $1,500 to $3,000 less than the key competition with what we think is a more room and a lot more personality and a great value equation," Federico said.

The Chevy Spark has four doors, unlike the competing Fiat 500 and Toyota Scion IQ, which have two.

The Spark is powered by an 84 horsepower engine.
