With the new look, Facebook's 1-billion plus users can customize their news feed to the articles, posts and images that most interested them.

The upgraded feeds will feature larger photos and videos, feeds organized by content type including music, games and followed pages.

It also makes the site look the same regardless of whether you're on a computer, smart phone or tablet.

The new feed provides Facebook more users data, allowing better targeting for advertisers, something the company has struggled with.

Zuckerberg said, "Because of the history of news feed, it's easy to think of it as a single stream of content but our goal is actually a lot broader.  What were trying to do is give everyone in the world, the best personalized newspaper that we can. How we are all sharing is changing and the design of the news feed needs to reflect this evolving face of news feed."

The director of design for Facebook, Julie Zhuo added, "They say a picture is worth a thousand words and today's design is more like 500. In the new Facebook design we are really taking these photos and putting them front and center so they are more visual more beautiful and more immersive so you can get a sense of the experiences that your friends are sharing from the moment they are captured in their daily lives."
