DETROIT – Whether you love them or hate them, the office holiday party is making a comeback in 2012. Many businesses cut back on the annual tradition during the recession as one way to cut costs, but a new survey shows a big majority are now ready to deck the halls.

Close to 83 percent of 100 human resources managers said their companies will host an event this year, including 10 percent who didn't have a party last year because of the economy, according to preliminary results from the annual Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc., holiday party survey.

However, don't expect the big, expensive affairs of the past. Few companies will be serving up surf and turf, or giving away televisions or exotic trips like they used to do 20 years ago. Instead, they're planning more modest affairs.

Other surveys show most people like holiday parties. At companies that hold parties, 79 percent of managers and 75 percent of employees say they enjoy them, according to OfficeTeam's 2012 office holiday party survey.
