Alcorn State (0-5) Vs. Detroit (3-1)
GAME NOTES: Once again the Alcorn State Braves shoot for their first win of the 2009-10 campaign as they contend against the Detroit Titans as part of the 2K Sports Classic Benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer at SEFCU Arena in Albany, New York today.
The Braves, who have yet to play a single game at home in 2009-10, are off to an abysmal 0-5 start. The squad is winless in the two games here during this tournament, first falling to host Albany on Friday in a 71-55 decision and then being blown away by Robert Morris in a 107-76 final on Saturday.
As for the Titans, who are meeting Alcorn State for the very first time, they've bounced back from a 95-61 loss to California on the road in the season opener to capture three consecutive wins.
The squad followed up a home win versus Western Michigan last Sunday with a 71-59 triumph against Robert Morris on Friday and a 66-54 defeat of host Albany yesterday.
Going up against a Robert Morris squad that had something to prove yesterday, the Braves had little chance of survival as they bowed in the 31-point decision. Nevertheless, JaMarkus Holt tried to make the best of the situation by delivering a game-high 26 points and clearing eight rebounds, both of which were team highs for the program. Brandon Rogers tacked on 13 points, but outside of those two players only Ian Francis (eight points) made more than just two field goals for Alcorn State. A mere 33.8 percent shooter from the floor through the first five games of the season, Holt paces the team with his 13.6 ppg and is close to averaging a double-double thanks to his 9.4 rpg as well. Jonathan Boyd checks in with 11.8 ppg and Rogers another 11.5 ppg, the latter having appeared in only two of five contests for the group.
Detroit didn't exactly impress anyone with its 38.8 percent shooting from the field and 3-of-14 effort behind the three-point line on Saturday, yet that was still enough to get the Titans past Albany in a double-digit victory. Eli Holman was the star of the game for the Titans with a double-double consisting of 20 points and 14 rebounds as he made good on all but one of his eight field goal attempts. Xavier Keeling actually posted a team-best 21 points, while Woody Payne tallied 10 points to go along with five assists and four steals in the triumph. Forget that he is shooting only 61.3 percent at the free-throw line and that he has turned the ball over 16 times and has just three assists in four games, and focus on the fact that Holman is currently averaging a double-double for Detroit with 16.3 points and 10.3 rebounds per contest. Chase Simon (12.8 ppg), Keeling (12.5 ppg) and Thomas Kennedy (10.3 ppg) are all doing their part on offense as well.
As long as Holman handles the paint and doesn't try to get too fancy with his ball handling, the Titans should be well on their way to another victory today.
