Wolverines Top Iowa To Remain Unbeaten

POSTED: 9:01 pm EDT October 21, 2006

(Sports Network) - Mike Hart rushed for 126 yards and two touchdowns to lift the second-ranked Michigan Wolverines past the Iowa Hawkeyes, 20-6, in a Big Ten clash.

Chad Henne was an efficient 23-of-33 passing for 203 yards with an interception for the Wolverines (8-0, 5-0 Big Ten), who have won nine of their last 11 meetings with Iowa. Iowa native Adrian Arrington made eight catches for 79 yards.

"Our offensive line is in great condition, so, in the second half, Iowa wore down," said Hart. "Our line was in top shape, and that's when things started to open up."

Drew Tate was limited to 21-of-36 throwing for 197 yards and was sacked five times. Dominique Douglas hauled in six passes for 63 yards for the Hawkeyes (5-3, 2-3), who have lost three of four.

"Our football team has nothing to be ashamed of," said Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz. "They should be extremely proud of their effort and extremely proud of the way they played today, and if we continue to play with that kind of effort and toughness we will have a chance to do some good things as the year goes on."

After a scoreless first frame that featured four punts and a fumble by Tate, the two teams kicked a pair of punts in the second before Michigan got on the board with a field goal.

Henne began the Wolverine scoring drive that started on his own 43 with a 17- yard completion to Carson Butler. The Michigan offense then mixed the pass and run before Henne again hooked up with Butler for a 12-yard gain down to the four.

Hart, though, managed to gain just a yard on the ground and Henne misfired on two passes as the Wolverines had to settle for Garrett Rivas' 20-yard field goal with 7:13 left in the first half.

After another series of punts, Michigan took over what was the last drive of the half at the Iowa 49 with under 10 seconds left. Henne then connected with Arrington on a 15-yard completion, but his end zone heave as time expired was knocked down.

Henne was intercepted by Mike Humpal on the opening drive of the third quarter, giving Iowa the ball at the Michigan 27. The Hawkeyes failed to get a first down, though, and had to settle for Kyle Schlicher's game-tying 34-yard field goal less than five minutes into the third.

"We always want touchdowns in there and not field goals, but they (Michigan) played good defense on that one third down," said Tate.

The Wolverines came right back with the game's first touchdown to take a 10-3 lead. The drive was set up in good position as Steve Breaston took the kickoff 64 yards to the Iowa 35. A six-yard run by Breaston on third down gave Michigan a first and Hart capped the eight-play, 35-yard march with a nine- yard touchdown run.

"He's having a great year," Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr said of Breaston. "He had a great day today as a receiver and as a return guy. He is a team guy. What he has done for this football team -- the leadership that he provided -- you can't put a value on him. "

Iowa responded and, helped by two Tate completions for over 20 yards, moved to the Wolverine 11. The drive stalled at the four however and Schlicher made it a 10-6 game on a 22-yard field goal with 2:11 left in the third.

Michigan answered with 10 straight points to run its lead to 20-6. First, Rivas capped a nine-play, 49-yard march that bridged the third and fourth quarters with a 37-yard field goal.

Then after a series of punts, Michigan took over just behind midfield and drove to the Iowa 10. Hart then took a handoff and headed right before cutting back to the middle. He was able to scamper into the end zone to seal the Wolverine victory with 3:59 to go.

Game Notes

Breaston made seven catches for 49 yards while Butler hauled in three passes for 42 yards...Damian Sims was Iowa's leading rusher with 22 yards...Scott Chandler made four catches for 66 yards in the losing effort...Michigan leads the all-time series 40-10-4.
