Gophers Kick FG With One Second Left To Beat Michigan

POSTED: Saturday, October 8, 2005

Redshirt freshman Jason Giannini kicked a 30-yard field goal with one second left and Laurence Maroney rushed 36 times for 129 yards and a score as Minnesota defeated No. 21 Michigan, 23-20, in a Big Ten matchup at the Big House.

Gary Russell carried the ball 18 times for 128 yards and Bryan Cupito was 11- of-23 for 139 yards and a score, as the Golden Gophers (5-1, 2-1 Big Ten) defeated the Wolverines to capture the Little Brown Jug for the first time since 1986, snapping a 16-game losing streak versus Michigan.

"It's been 19 years since we've had the Brown Jug," said Minnesota head coach Glen Mason. "We have some guys in the locker room right now who aren't 19 years old!"

Mike Hart ran for 109 yards and a touchdown and Chad Henne was 14-of-29 for 155 yards, but Michigan (3-3, 1-2) lost at home for the second time this season. The Wolverines also fell to Notre Dame on September 10.

"The sign of a true champion is how they come back, and now we'll see what the team's all about," said Hart. "We're 3-3. That's motivation right there. We can't lose anymore."

Steve Breaston ran a kickoff back 95 yards for a score for the Wolverines.

On 3rd-and-10 from the Gophers' 26-yard line, Russell rumbled 61 yards off right tackle down to Michigan's 14 with 1:10 left in regulation to set up Giannini's game-winning field goal.

"I'm just glad I had the opportunity to get that kick," said Giannini. "It felt really good."

The Wolverines took their opening possession to the Minnesota six-yard line, but the drive stalled and Michigan had to settle for a 23-yard field goal from Garrett Rivas.

The Gophers tied the game with 12:40 left in the second quarter after embarking on 14-play drive that reached the Michigan 11-yard line and culminated in a 29-yard field goal from Giannini.

With just under six minutes remaining in the half, Rivas connected on his second field goal of the game after booting a 47-yarder to give the Wolverines a 6-3 lead.

Michigan upped that lead after recovering a fumble at the Minnesota 23-yard line. Six plays later, Hart slammed in from the one on fourth down to give the Wolverines a 13-3 second-quarter advantage.

Minnesota responded on the ensuing drive, going 75 yards in seven plays capped by a 20-yard TD pass from Cupito to Ernest Wheelwright with just 58 seconds remaining in the half to cut Michigan's lead to 13-10.

After Jakari Wallace returned the opening kickoff of the second half 60 yards, Minnesota drove inside the Wolverines' 10-yard line, but settled for another Giannini field goal, this one from 26-yards out, to tie the game.

Breaston regained the lead for Michigan after returning the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown. He broke to the right sideline, avoided a diving tackle from Giannini and cut across the field to give the Wolverines a 20-13 lead with 12:25 remaining in the third quarter.

Thanks to some hard running by Maroney and two big pass-interference penalties, Minnesota drove 61 yards in 15 plays culminating in a one-yard TD run from Maroney on a sweep to tie the game at 20-20 with 6:12 left in the third. Maroney carried the ball five times on the drive.
