Michigan Beats Previously Unbeaten Penn State On Game's Final Play

POSTED: Sunday, October 16, 2005

Chad Henne hit Mario Manningham for a 10-yard touchdown pass on the game's final play, as Michigan edged eighth-ranked and previously unbeaten Penn State, 27-25, in a thrilling contest at The Big House.

Henne ended 21-of-36 for 212 yards and threw a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns for the Wolverines (4-3, 2-2 Big Ten), who rebounded from last week's crushing home loss to Minnesota.

Mike Hart rushed for 108 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries and also converted a key two-point conversion, while Manningham had 49 yards receiving and two scores in the win.

"I have had a number of wild games in the past few years, but I have never had a wilder game than this one," said Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr.

Michael Robinson was spectacular in defeat, as he went 19-of-34 for 239 yards with an interception and rushed for two touchdowns, including one in the final minute that briefly gave the Nittany Lions the lead.

Tony Hunt had 14 carries for 102 yards for Penn State (6-1, 3-1), which was looking to start a season with seven straight wins for the first time since the 1999 club began 9-0.

The Nittany Lions, unranked two weeks ago, jumped up to eighth in the country courtesy of last Saturday's 17-10 win over then-No. 6 Ohio State.

Penn State also had an eight-game winning streak halted that dated back to last season. It had been the third-longest winning streak in the nation.

"They're a great bunch of kids and I'm proud of them," said Penn State head coach Joe Paterno. "I don't know what else to say. They've been great to work with, so yeah, I'm disappointed for them. Having said that, you can't feel sorry for them too long. You have to go back to work. From here we go to Illinois."

Trailing 21-18 late in the fourth quarter, the Nittany Lions began at their 19-yard line and quickly got into Michigan territory, keyed by a 28-yard pass to Jordan Norwood. After several short completions, a big run by Robinson was called back due to holding, and Penn State was eventually forced with 4th- and-7 from the 39-yard line.

On fourth down, Robinson scampered for nine yards to keep the drive alive, and two plays later Isaac Smolko caught a 15-yard pass to move the ball inside the red zone. A defensive pass interference penalty then moved the football to the three-yard line, and on the next play, Robinson took it in on a designed sneak out to make it 25-21 with just 53 seconds left.

The 13-play, 81-yard drive took 1:53, but the game was far from over.

Steve Breaston immediately returned the ensuing kick to the Wolverine 47-yard line and Michigan quickly got deep into Penn State territory. A 17-yard completion to Jason Avant and an 11-yard run by Hart highlighted the drive and moved the ball to the 16.

After getting to the Penn State 10 on a short pass to Manningham, the Wolverines had six seconds remaining. Henne misfired his next pass, but Michigan had one second left on the clock to set up the unbelievable ending.

On the game's final play, Henne found Manningham on a crossing route in the end zone and the Wolverines pulled off the improbable win.

"Mario is a big game-breaker," said Henne. "He's improving every week. I'm just glad he's on our side. He works hard, he's a speedy guy, and he has the motivation to improve every week."

Following a Nittany Lions score that made it 10-10 early in the fourth quarter, Michigan took over but things quickly turned sour for the Wolverines. Henne was running with the ball around the right side and had it taken away by Alan Zemaitis just before the quarterback hit the ground. The cornerback then raced untouched for a 35-yard touchdown to put Penn State ahead for the first time in the game.

However, the snap was botched on the point after, and kicker Kevin Kelly picked it up off the ground and took it in for an unconventional two-point conversion to make it 18-10 with 11:39 remaining.

The Wolverines quickly responded with a five-play, 55-yard drive and got in the end zone when Henne found Manningham down the left side for a 33-yard score. Michigan then was forced to go for two and converted on Hart's rush, which tied the game at 18-18 with 9:32 to play.

After forcing a punt, the Wolverines took over at their own 42 courtesy of Breaston's 23-yard return. Michigan moved downfield but got stopped at the Lions' 30. The visitors would settle for Garrett Rivas' 47-yard field goal which made it 21-18 with 3:45 left.

Robinson was then intercepted on the ensuing series and the Wolverines took over deep in Penn State territory. However a penalty pushed Michigan back before it was eventually forced to punt, which set up the great ending.

The Nittany Lions missed two field goals in the first half and Michigan took advantage of the second miss to take a 3-0 lead.

The Wolverines marched 53 yards in seven plays before Rivas booted a 35-yard field goal with 4:34 left in the first half.

On the ensuing series, the Nittany Lions were on the move, but Robinson fumbled the ball and Michigan recovered. The Wolverines marched down the field but could not capitalize on the turnover, as Rivas' 43-yard field goal was no good and the half came to a close with Michigan leading 3-0.

In the third quarter, the Wolverines took the opening possession and drove down the field courtesy of Hart. On the 70-yard series, Hart had 32 rushing yards and capped the march with a short two-yard TD burst to make it 10-0 with 11:10 left in the period.

Penn State finally got its offense going late in the third quarter, as it moved down to its opponents' seven-yard line courtesy of Terrell Golden's career-long 56-yard catch on 3rd-and-5. However, the Nittany Lions could not punch it in and settled for Kelly's 25-yard field goal to pull within 10-3 with 10 seconds left in the period.

Early in the fourth, Penn State then tied the game with 11:56 left as Robinson's four-yard quarterback sneak capped a four-play, 63-yard march.
