Inauguration Hat Designed In Detroit

The Queen of Soul definitely has style, and it was on full display at President Barack Obama's inauguration Tuesday.

The hat that Aretha Franklin wore during her performance quickly came up in conversation across the country, but its roots are in Detroit in a shop off Woodward Avenue.

Luke Song of Moza Inc. designed the hat for Franklin.

"She does come in here maybe four or five times a year," said Song.

Song said Franklin saw a hat style she liked and told him to tweak the design so it would match her suit.

"She wanted to tone it down for the inaugural, so we made a version for her with felt to match her suit," Song said. ""We made the hat for her in two days."

Song said he actually made three hats for Franklin and had special felt flown in and hand molded just for her.

Song said he's received dozens of orders for the hat since Tuesday.

The original hat that Franklin's was styled after costs $400. The one Franklin wore was $178.
