DETROIT -- Tough economic times and a shrinking membership have forced St. Conrad Catholic Church in Melvindale to close its doors for good after Sunday's 10 a.m. mass. For Vivian Howard, who has been a parishioner since the church opened 42 years ago, said the closure is devastating."It's like losing a member of the family," she said.
Howard said she has taught religion class at St. Conrad's for more than 20 years and both of her sons have made all their sacraments there. At the end of Sunday's mass, Bishop Francis Reese led a ceremonial procession from the altar, and members of the church council carried out symbolic items such as holy water, oils and various documents. A ribbon was tied around the doors, to signify the end of an era."I think change is inevitable. The only thing that's constant in my life is God's love for me and that I am one of his children," said Howard. " I just keep going with that -- that gives us support no matter what we have to face."The parishioners, however, will not be left without a home. The church will assimilate with its mother church, St. Mary Magdalen on 19624 Wood Street.St. Conrad's started from St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church 42 years ago.On July 6, parishioners of St. Conrad will be welcomed by the congregation at St. Mary Magdalen with a special unity mass.
