DETROIT - A conference bringing together nonprofit, government, business and civic leaders from around the world is taking place in Detroit.

The 2016 Points of Light Conference on Volunteering and Service kicks off June 27, and runs through June 29 at Cobo Center.

Thousands of people will gain knowledge, resources and connections needed to help service efforts work better in their communities.

Tracy Hoover, president and CEO, Points of Light, says in a statement Detroit "sets an inspiring backdrop for learning from those leading transformation."

The organization's name comes from the 1989 inaugural address by President George H.W. Bush, who described Americans serving each other as "a thousand points of light."

Conference participants will fill 5,000 backpacks with school supplies and healthy snacks as part of a hands-on service opportunity.
