Coney Showdown Coming To Motown

Cable TV Channel Looks For Winner in Food Wars

DETROIT -- The long-running battle over who has the best Coney Island hot dog in Detroit comes to a head on Friday.

The Travel Channel brings its "Food Wars" series to Detroit to pit Lafayette Coney Island against those served up by American Coney Island.

The two shops have stood side-by-side in downtown Detroit for years. Each has its core of loyal fans who enjoy hot dogs on steamed buns, covered with chili, mustard and chopped onions.

The Travel Channel has been in Detroit this week doing preliminary filming.

Cameras will be ready Friday evening when supporters will gather at both restaurants and then march to Detroit's Greektown.

The taste-testing showdown will take place at the Old Shillelagh tavern in Greektown.

Local 4's Carmen Harlan will take part in the judging.
