Belle Isle Aquarium Keeps Doors Open, For Now

Detroit City Council Gives Extension

POSTED: Wednesday, February 23, 2005

An extension was given to supporters of the Belle Isle Aquarium Wednesday who are trying to keep the historic site open.

The 100-year-old aquarium was scheduled to close in March as part of a plan by Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick to balance the budget for the city of Detroit. The Detroit City Council announced a 60-day extension for Friends of the Belle Isle Aquarium to establish a fund-raising plan, Local 4 reported.

Closing the aquarium would save the city $500,000 per year, Local 4 reported. Friends of the Belle Isle Aquarium have developed a plan to raise money through private donors and fund-raisers.

Detroit Zoo director Ron Kagan -- who has supported closing the facility, citing a decline in attendance -- is scheduled to meet with supporters Thursday to discuss further options, Local 4 reported.

Supporters are also expected to meet with Kilpatrick later this week.
