Cass Tech grad designed Michelle Obama's stunning Democratic convention dress

Tracy Reese's design earns praise

DETROIT – The praised dress Michelle Obama wore at the Democratic convention has a big Detroit connection. It was designed by a Cass Tech grad!

Tracy Reese is a New York-based designer, but she was born and raised in Detroit.

Retired Cass Tech fashion teacher Marian Stephens was Reese's teachers in the 80s.

"It really makes me feel wonderful, such a talented person. We all knew that she was going to do well," Stephens said.

Want the dress? Reese says she's rushing to make them.

Reese tells NBC's "Today" show that the hot pink silk jaquard dress with pale blue trim at the hem will cost under $500.

The designer says she was planning the dress for a later season. But now it's being rushed through the production cycle so, quote, "more people can get their hands on it sooner."
