DETROIT – What is FAM Academy of Detroit?

FAM Academy of Detroit (FAM) is a tuition?free school that gives students who have dropped out of high school a new option for earning a high school diploma. The school combines online coursework with personal support and face?to?face instruction from caring, highly qualified, certified teachers.

Students earn an accredited high school diploma, which is recognized by the State of Michigan and allows graduates to enroll in colleges, universities or vocational/technical training programs or join the military.

Who can Attend FAM Academy of Detroit?

Students who have dropped out of high school and want to earn their diploma can attend FAM Academy of Detroit. Students are eligible to attend FAM if they are 19 or younger as of Aug. 31, 2012 and have been identified by the Michigan Student Data System as dropping out before completing 12th grade.

The blended learning model at offers young people who have dropped out of school the opportunity to re?enroll, earn their high school diploma and transition to a path toward their education or career goals.

FAM is perfect for students who would like a structured environment and/or may not have Internet access at home.

What is the class day like?

The class day at FAM Academy of Detroit is flexible and convenient. FAM students:

  • Attend one of three four?and?a?half?hour sessions daily, Monday through Friday, which allows time for family and work responsibilities
  • Follow a prescribed learning path in technology?rich environment
  • Work in a small classroom setting and receive one?on?one attention from highly qualified teachers who are passionate about helping students who have dropped out succeed
  • Collaborate on group projects and learning activities guided by caring teachers

What do students learn?
The rigorous FAM Academy of Detroit curriculum is aligned to the Common Core and Michigan state standards. Students follow a prescribed learning path developed exclusively for them. Each learning path includes:

  • essential skills (reading, writing and mathematics)

  • art and music appreciation
  • life management
  • post?secondary education and career preparation
