Something big, red and that stands for a good cause has arrived in Detroit.

The Salvation Army's Red Kettle -- which is 56 feet tall and 24 feet wide -- was installed early Thursday morning in Campus Martius park. The kettle is part of the organization's goal to raise $8.5 million during an 82-day fundraising campaign. The goal will help provide more than three million meals and nearly 700,000 nights of shelter throughout the year to those in need.

The kettle will be lit by 25,000 lights on Nov. 16 as part of the city's tree lighting ceremony.
