Bringing hope to the dinner table

Gleaners raises money to help fight hunger

It was an assembly line of plastic bags, being filled with canned food to feed starving families in Metro Detroit.
"We are getting bags filled with food for kids to take home for the weekend who don't usually have food," said Caitlin Rionda, a student volunteer.

Students from St. Paul Lake Catholic School in Grosse Pointe came down to the Gleaners Food Bank in Detroit to show their support for the W.O.M.C Radiothon and to help them fight hunger.

"The stats are scary," said W.O.M.C morning show host Bobby Mitchell. "One in four kids is hungry, so the Hunger Heroes are those who are making a difference so that kid gets a meal."

All year long Gleaners Food Bank is dedicated to helping families fight hunger, but now they need Hunger Heroes.

"Hey be a Hunger Hero, commit to a dollar amount," said Mitchell. "So every month we know some money is coming in, so the Gleaners can go out and bring hope to the table."

"It's kids helping kids," said Rionda. "We are trying to give back and help other people."

Fighting hunger can be challenging, but we can all do it together.

"It shows us that we can help," said student volunteer John McShane. "But it shows other people they can help too. The more people that help the more food unprivileged kids will get."

"Hunger is an invisible thing," said Michell. "You don't know who is hungry."
