East Detroit schools broaden Schools of Choice plan

District will accept students from other counties

EASTPOINTE, Mich. – The East Detroit Public Schools Board of Education voted Monday night to expand the Schools of Choice plan it adopted in February.

The board voted last month to accept kindergarten through eighth-grade students from other districts in Macomb County.

The move was intended to help boost enrollment in the district which has seen enrollment decline while funding has diminished.

The board did not plan to discuss the Schools of Choice plan at Monday's meeting, but took up the issue and voted 5-to-2 to expand the plan.

The East Detroit Public Schools will now accept students from districts in Wayne and Oakland counties.

It joins six other districts in Macomb County that have that policy in place.
