MSU to host commencement ceremonies Friday, Saturday

UM's Mary Sue Coleman, Chrysler's Sergio Marchionne among speakers

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State University says it will host commencement ceremonies Friday and Saturday at the Jack Breslin Student Events Center, located on the corner of Harrison Road and Kalamazoo Street.

There are a total of 1,688 undergraduate degree candidates and 786 advanced degree candidates. According to the university, the College of Social Science has the most undergraduate degree candidates with 348.

The advanced degree commencement will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday and Mary Sue Coleman, president of the University of Michigan, will deliver the commencement address.

MSU says Coleman will receive an honorary doctorate of laws.

James Hackett, CEO of Steelcase Inc., will speak at the undergraduate ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday. The university said he will receive an honorary doctorate of humanities.

Also at that ceremony, Julie Mehretu, an internationally renowned artist, will receive an honorary doctorate of fine arts, MSU said.

At 2 p.m. Saturday, Sergio Marchionne, chairman and CEO of Chrysler Group, LLC, and CEO of Fiat S.p.A., will speak, receiving an honorary doctorate of engineering. In addition, MSU said William White, chairman, president and CEO of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, will receive an honorary doctorate of humanities.
