Friends of the Detroit River host 14th annual Shiver on the River

DETROIT – The Friends of the Detroit River will host its 14th annual Shiver on the River on Saturday at the Belle Isle Casino in Detroit.

Shiver on the River is a family-oriented event that celebrates Detroit's historic island park. According to Friends of the Detroit River, although the event is based at the Casino building, many of the buildings on the island will be open to explore.

This year's event will feature from 10 am to 3 pm bobcat caricatures, exhibits, displays, refreshments, environmental arts and crafts for children and more.

At 11 am, musician and storyteller Rev. Robert Jones will perform songs about Detroit and the Underground Railroad, workers migrating from our Southern States, the Industrial Revolution and Detroit putting the world on wheels.

At 12 pm and 2 pm, Janet Anderson, author of "Island in the City: How Belle Isle Changed Detroit Forever" will read selections from her new book meditating on the role of the river in city life.

At 12:30 pm, the Coast Guard will feature a helicopter fly by (approximated time, as conditions permit).

At 1:00 pm, the event will feature Magic John Children's Magician. An ice rescue demonstration will take place at the Coast Guard Station at 1:30 pm (approximated time, as conditions permit).

The event is free for all with no registration required. Saturday's event will take place from 10 am to 3 pm.
