The second annual Lemonade Day Detroit will be held this year on June 9, 2012. Lemonade Day Detroit, sponsored by Huntington Bank, is for children in Wayne, Macomb and Oakland counties. It is a free, annual, community-wide, educational initiative designed to teach children how to start, own and operate their own business – a lemonade stand, which will appear all over Wayne, Macomb and Oakland counties, from neighborhoods to retail spaces and everything in between.
In 2011, 28 cities in 16 states, hosted Lemonade Day. At a time when Detroit's story is one of strength and resiliency, Lemonade Day Detroit continues that message by helping the youth of the community learn valuable skills and the positives of business, to help them become the next generation of leaders. As Michigan continues its rebirth, new industries and businesses will undoubtedly emerge. And those businesses will be imagined, formed and run by our young people. We're excited to bring Lemonade Day to Michigan as a means of helping the youth of the community learn valuable skills and the positives of business. We hope Lemonade Day Detroit will launch the careers of our future business leaders.
The goal of Lemonade Day is to give children of all socio-economic backgrounds, in all neighborhoods, the opportunity to learn about starting their own business – and learning how to make money to "spend a little, save a little and give a little". Kids of all ages learn to set goals, develop a plan, secure an investor, create a product, make a profit and give back to their community however they choose.
Started in 2007 by Houston philanthropist and local entrepreneur, Michael Holthouse, Lemonade Day has become a national event where children register for free backpacks filled with age-appropriate information on how to start and become successful running a business. Children who participated in Lemonade Day 2010 poured more than 5 million glasses of lemonade and gave $2 million plus to charities of their choice. The support of our businesses, service organizations and foundation for Lemonade Day Detroit ensures the program is free. Each child will register to receive a backpack filled with all the tools for them to plan and set up their lemonade stand. Last year, 2,600 little entrepreneurs across Southeast Michigan registered for Lemonade Day Detroit.
Huntington National Bank is the perfect presenting sponsor: The bank is helping Lemonade Day Detroit young entrepreneurs learn financial management. All 51 Huntington branches will serve as registration and backpack pickup locations.
