Giving the gift of warmth

Donating a hat to children in need

It's not business as usual at the Beauty Lounge in West Bloomfield. That's because the Beauty Lounge's hairstylist are on a mission to keep kids in Michigan warm.

"You would be surprised how many kids don't have hats," said Lashell Williams, the founder of Hats for Honeys.

Williams started Hats for Honeys over 10 years ago. Hats for Honeys collects donated hats all around the community, and then adopts a school in Michigan and gives the hats to children in need.

"Each year we have different schools that writes me a letter and say they are in demand for hats for their children," Williams said. "Me and my team come together and decide what school to adopt."

This year, Hats for Honeys has chosen to adopt Carstens Elementary-Middle School on the east side of Detroit.

"They don't have hats, they don't have gloves or coats," said Constance L. Jackson Ferguson, a councilor at Carstens Elementary. "They come in, their ears are cold and so I just saw a need."

Ferguson wrote to Hats for Honeys, hoping that her students would be able to receive some assistance.

"You can tell, we warmed not just their bodies," Carstens Elementary School Principal Donna Thornton said. "We warmed their hearts."

Not only will the kids at Carstens stay warm this year, Hats for Honeys is helping the students stay in school.

"It directly affects instruction," Thornton said. "When they are cold, they don't come to school, they are not learning, so it is a vicious cycle."
