Grosse Pointe Farms church celebrates 150 years

GROSSE POINTE FARMS, Mich. – Members of Grosse Pointe Memorial Church are celebrating a huge milestone by giving back.

After 150 years, the church is still standing. In celebration, the pastor and church members are packing 150,000 meals to help others.

With help from volunteers, they plan to put the meal packets together. They'll be shipped out to those in need all across the world through the organization Kids Against Hunger.

"We did it last year. We packed 10 thousand meals last year and it only took little over an hour so that's why we went big this year with 150 thousand meals."

This time around, they looking to the community for extra help.

"We're looking for 900 people over the course of two Saturdays in March. We need 1,800 hands at the assembly tables packaging these meals Literally we set up many assembly lines and everybody has a job and you do your job and the end product is a packaged meal that feeds six people. A third will stay locally in the Detroit area. A third will go international and they keep a third of it for disaster relief purposes."

For two Saturday's, March 7th and 21st, the volunteers will work in shifts to put the meal packets together. These church members are hoping others will join them starting this weekend.

"It doesn't take much to help as many people as we can help in one Saturday."
