Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly. It has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. It causes the pancreas to stop producing insulin, a hormone essential to turning food into energy.

The disease forces people to constantly monitor their blood-sugar levels, inject or infuse insulin from a pump and carefully monitor eating and activity every day.
