Local families get help for the holidays

Volunteers of America Adopt A Family Program

DETROIT – The Volunteers of America Adopt A Family program could use a helping hand of its own. The program has been serving families in need across the state of Michigan since 1993.

In 2001, over 4,000 families were served. This the need is even greater.

"We already have applications for over 10,500 families here in Michigan," said Emilie Rohrbach of the Volunteers of America. "We are working through Christmas eve to help as many families as we can. We need families here in metro Detroit to come forward and say, 'we want to help', and we'll match them with a family in need."

Rohrbach said those looking to help can also donate toys, clothes or food that the Volunters of America can then distribute. If a volunteer wants to take donations directly to a family, Rohrbach said it should be done before Christmas so "those kids just like anybody else can wake up on Christmas and have something special."

Cash donations are also accepted. Rohrbach said $20 provides a toy for a child, $30 can supply warm winter clothing for a child, $50 provides Christmas dinner for a family, and $150 is enough to provide "an entire holiday experience for a family of four."
