Local man builds giant outdoor chess set in Detroit park

Balduck Park to feature new attraction

DETROIT – A local man's love for Balduck Park on Detroit's east side inspired him to build an amazing attraction for the community to enjoy.

Tom Campbell created “Friends of Balduck Park” and has cared for the park over the years by picking up trash there to keep the park sparkling.

He was able to give back to the park that has brought him so much joy Saturday.

Campbell hopes to attract seniors to the park by constructing a giant chess board.

“We’re just trying to accent the park and make it look beautiful,” Campbell said.

The park’s director loved the idea and Campbell enlisted the help of his friends, family and neighbors, along with several businesses volunteering their time and resources, to make the board come to life today.

“I was real excited when he told me about the project that we have going on,” volunteer Tony Weaver said.

The photo to the right shows what the finished product should look like after 4 p.m and the photo below shows the day's progress.
