SOUTHFIELD – The Local4Casters, along with hundreds of students, kids and parents, gathered at the Southfield Public Library for Weatherfest - an annual event that unites various organizations like the National Weather Service, Red Cross, Southfield Police Department, Coast Guard and more. Local 4 was proud to be the exclusive TV partner of the event.
Students from around the metro area came to learn about the weather, participate in fun activities, science presentations, and to watch the Local4Casters do live forecasts during the 2017 Young Meteorologist Program Weatherfest Rally on Wednesday, May 10.

The day started off with a bang as a Coast Guard helicopter landed right on the library courtyard. Kids ran out to greet the pilot, who then spent the next 30 minutes answering all the kids’ questions about what it takes to fly over miles of ocean searching for missing people, or dangle from a rope and hook 245 feet long.
Next up, Local 4 meteorologist Andrew Humphrey gave a presentation about his journey in meteorology. “Two things matter when choosing a career: what you love and what you know,” Humphrey told the kids. His audience loved him so much that after his talk, they ran up and asked him for autographs.
In the afternoon, the event opened up to the public, and Local 4 meteorologists Ben Bailey and Brandon Roux were there to answer questions and take pictures. Bailey gave a great presentation about tornadoes and weather safety.
The sunny skies allowed the kids to play outside and enjoy the beautiful weather that they just learned about. There was a smile on each kid’s face, proving that this day was as fun as it was informative.
The event was free and open to the public and kids got a chance to meet Owlie Skywarn, the mascot from the National Weather Service.
