Mr. Pita steps up to help fight diabetes

Mr. Pita to join American Diabetes Association as sponsor for event

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. – Mr. Pita will join the American Diabetes Association as a sponsor to host "Step Out: Walk To Stop Diabetes," taking place on Saturday at the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak.

Organizers said the event features an interactive two-mile walk through the zoo with a variety of entertainment, a health and fitness festival, brunch, live entertainment, a youth zone and more.

The walk celebrates those who have diabetes and includes the Red Strider program. Event organizers said the Red Strider program is unique to the ADA, providing participants living with diabetes the opportunity to receive special recognition at the event.

The association expects nearly 3,500 participants and volunteers to gather at the Detroit Zoo.

"This is going to be a great event and we just could not pass up the opportunity to sponsor a fight against such a deadly disease," said Chris Konja, Mr. Pita's marketing manager.

"Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes" is a national event involving over 100,000 walkers throughout the country, and is the largest event the Michigan American Diabetes Association hosts.

For more than 20 years, organizers said the event has raised over $150 million for diabetes research, advocacy and programs for all types of diabetes.

The event will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday.
