Oakland University to host record swap

Oakland University's radio station WXOU will host their first annual Record Swap at the Oakland Center Fireside Lounge on Sept. 9 during ‘Welcome Week' for students.

The idea? Bring some of your records and trade with others.

"This is our first Record Swap event, so it's going to be a bit of an experiment between us and the campus community," said WXOU's Music Director Anthony Spak. "We'll have a room reserved with table and chairs and we want people to bring their records. From there, they'll be able to either trade their records between themselves or trade some of theirs for some of ours."

You might be thinking -- students with vinyl? Spak said it's making a comeback.

"Young people are starting to embrace vinyl again for its sound quality and visual appeal," Spak told Local 4's Lauren Podell. "There is no better feeling than holding and feeling a big piece of tangible music in your hands, there is also the collecting aspect of vinyl. Its not fun to collect mp3 files. But it is fun and exciting to collect vinyl. That's what our event is all about - sharing in that excitement of discovering a new or an old record."

Found Sound Records in Ferndale is sponsoring the free event and even donated crates of records for traders to search through. The first 50 attendees will get free WXOU t-shirts.

This event is free and open to everyone.

"I hope this event brings both new and old members of the Oakland University community together during this busy Welcome Week time," said WXOU General Manager, Lauren Barthold. "Take a record that is old to someone, but new to you. Leave one that's old to you, but new and exciting to someone else, It's a campus event unlike any other designed to bring music lovers together."
