'Planet Lori' art camp is Aug. 25-29 at BBAC

The family of Lori Haber Buckfire, a young mother and talented artist from Bloomfield Hills who lost her five-year battle with ovarian cancer in July 2010 at age 41, is holding the Planet Lori art camp this summer from August 25-29th at Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center (BBAC).This free week of camp is designed for children who have experienced or are experiencing a parent or close relative with cancer.

During her chemotherapy treatments, Lori and her young son Hayden spent many afternoons playing and talking together at the kitchen table with paint, colored pencils and canvases.

After her death, her husband Daniel L. Buckfire created the Lori Haber Buckfire Foundation and published a book, "The Best of Times," from Lori's blog postings during her cancer journey and artwork.

The foundation is raising money for ovarian cancer research and also to fund the art classes for children whose parents have cancer.

Said Buckfire, "One of Lori's greatest joys was spending time with Hayden working on art projects together. Art can be very healing, so for us, creating this camp in her name gives children who are dealing with this difficult process, even if they are not directly affected, the chance to spend time together in a joyful setting."

The camp runs daily August 25-29, from 9 am –3 pm.

For those families wishing to send their children to the camp, they can visit www.planetlori.com under "Art Camp" to download an application.

Eligible applicants are being accepted on a first come basis.
