Ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday for special education wing

New building at Diann Banks-Williamson Center

DETROIT – Detroit Public Schools is hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Special Education wing at the Diann Banks-Williamson Center on Tuesday at 11 a.m.

The sneak peak tour of the $6.67 million center will allow guests to see the new 20,000 square-foot structure that's due to open on Sept. 3.

The building, located at 5020 Cadieux, is on the campus of East English Village Preparatory Academy and will provide freshmen through seniors with highly qualified teaching and a supportive staff.

The new earth-friendly building will have 13 classrooms with modern technology, heating and cooling, a clinic, computer lab, showers, changing rooms and students will have access to the Olympic-sized swimming pool, gymnasium and cafeteria in the main building.

Students will also have an outdoor classroom and nurture area.
