Salvation Army of metro Detroit accepting requests for holiday help

Applications being accepted at Salvation Army Corps Community Centers

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Shonita Carreker is a single mother of four who went to the Salvation Army for emergency food assistance last year.

Through their new program, Pathway of Hope,  she has been inspired to write a book, her kids have an after school program to attend and a local business just adopted her family to provide a Thanksgiving dinner.

Shonita Carreker says, "If there are people out there who are worried about where their money is going, I'm living proof that their money is going into doing something good for the community."

The Red Kettle Campaign is one way the Salvation Army raises fund to provide programs and services like Pathway of Hope.

"When you see one of our 470 red kettles, whatever you drop in there is going to give hope to someone in need in this community," says Captain Kelsie Moreno, Corps Officer at The Salvation Army Detroit Harding Corps.

Eight-five cents of every dollar donated to the Salvation Army goes towards client assistance. Last year they provided 87,000 gifts to children and adults in need.

This season, they are still in need of volunteer bell ringers and people willing to adopt families. If you are interested in assisting the Salvation Army this holiday season or year round, contact your local Salvation Army community center:
