Seminar to teach youth about law enforcement interactions

Police involved shootings and killings of young men has made headlines all across the country recently. A local organization is working to prevent these incidents from happening in the first place.

The B.A.L.L. Foundation, a non-profit organization started by our very own 5 a-m producer, Randy Henry, is hosting a seminar called “Surviving the Stop.” The goal is to teach young men, ages 12-18 how to conduct themselves if they're ever pulled over by law enforcement. Organizers believe knowing what to do during a traffic stop could make the difference between life and death.

"When you are stopped I think what is expected is that you comply with orders that you are given,” said Wayne County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Chief, Ray Washington. “That you remain calm. That you don't challenge the police officer in the street."

"If one kid can learn something out of this event and walk away from a stop then I've done my job," said B.A.L.L. Foundation founder, Randy Henry. "If I can give them some techniques and help them survive the stop then I'm helping somebody and that's my whole goal to put my arm around one of these young boys and say ‘look man I want you to stay alive, survive the stop and fight for another day."

There's a lot more to learn at this seminar. The first 250 boys to attend, ages 12-18, can attend the seminar for free.
