St. Clair County high school to host career expo on Wednesday

Capac Career Expo gives students opportunity to visit, talk with professionals

MUSSEY, Mich. – Although the school year is just starting, a career expo is gearing up. It will be in a small Michigan town. It's got robots and professionals helping students decide the future of science and engineering.

Capac High School in partnership with their FIRST robotics team, FRC #2604 Metal and Soul, will host the career expo on Wednesday.

School officials said the career expo will give their students the opportunity to visit and talk with professionals in a variety of careers.

Janet Antilla, organizer of the expo, said the event encourages kids to look beyond high school.

"Start thinking about what class they need to take if they're interested in a particular career," said Antilla.

The expo also aims to put the St. Clair County community on the technological map.

"Even though we're up in St. Clair County and Capac's known for cows, chickens and pigs, we are known for a lot more than that, and we have a lot of smart kids up there ready to work hard," Antilla said.

Some of the most dedicated students are on Capac High School's FIRST robotics team, and they jumped in to help organize.

"The team said, 'Hey, we can do that,' and they started sending out letters and requesting different professionals to come out," said Antilla.

What's also amazing about the expo and adventures like this is that non-science students can get involved, too.

"First helped me by improving my social skills, my presentation skills and being able to talk to young people more easily," said Future Youth Pastor Austin Kemp.

The students said they also enjoy showing off their skills.

"We do demos all the time where we just drive the robot around the school and just try to get people interested, and it's always loads of fun," said Nathan Antilla, a future scientist and entrepreneur.

It may pay off for all of us with new jobs and new businesses.

"There's plenty of people around here who need work and have the skills to do it, and I'm sure I can find funding somewhere. So, starting a business here sounds like a good possibility."

The Capac Career Expo will be held from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the gymnasium of the high school, located at 541 North Glassford Street in Mussey.
