Vietnam veterans, youth ministry gives away free food, clothes to homeless

The Vietnam Veterans of America will be giving away clothes and food to the homeless

DETROIT – The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 9 has partnered with Outcry Youth and Street Ministry to host a daylong free clothing and food giveaway to help the homeless on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Hundreds of blankets, sleeping bags, thermal pants, coats and "bunny boots" will be given away, said Brother Joe Hicks. Many of the items were donated by Faith Baptist Church in Chelsea.

Besides the clothing, the VVA Chapter 9 will serve food and giveaway canned goods.

The VAA Chapter organizers for Chpater 9 trace the group's history to 1971 and Wayne State University, where many verterans were attending school under the G.I. Bill. The group's members eventually purchased the VVA site at Woodward Avenue and Temple Street and have hosted numerous event over the years.

Brother Joe founded his street ministry in the mid-1970s, and his organization continues to assist hundreds of homeless and indigent individuals across the city.
