Volunteers to count unsheltered homeless population

OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. – The Alliance for Housing will conduct the National Street and Shelter Point-In-Time homeless street count Wednesday night from 7-11 p.m.

More than 150 volunteers are expected to help out from dozens of community partner agencies involved in the Alliance for Housing, but more are welcome to join any team.

After a briefing, the teams of four and five people will fan out across Oakland County to count the unsheltered homeless population.

The teams will meet at either Grace Centers of Hope at 210 North Perry in Pontiac or St. James Parish Hall at 241 Pearson St. in Ferndale before dispersing to also provide care packages to those on the streets. The teams will return by 11 to turn in their counts.

The count, which is required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), must take place during the last 10 days of January, and is important in determining federal and state funding for homelessness prevention and solutions.

Anyone who would like to be part of a team is encouraged to call Elizabeth Ireland at 248-824-7311.
