DETROIT – The application process is officially open for Write A House, a nonprofit organization that is giving away a home for free in Detroit.
"Over the weekend, we got about 67 applications, which is good for early on in the process," said Write A House co-founder Sarah Cox. "Again, there are several weeks to apply, and right now there are about six people from Michigan – the rest are all over the country."

The idea behind the organization is simple: "To raise awareness for literary arts in Detroit through picking one person who is going to be a star … and creating a community for writers here in Detroit."
To qualify, the writer must meet the age and income requirements, be a U.S. citizen, submit an application and a writing sample. Writers must also be working at the craft, not necessarily full time, and have at least some history of publication.
Then, it's up to the judges.
"They will be reading and making recommendations. We will pick 10 finalists," Cox said.
The winner will continue their career as a writer in the city, mortgage-and-rent free.
"Whether you're specifically covering Detroit, or just interested in, you know, the history of the city and the environment here, I do think it's an inspiring place to be," Cox said.
Applications are being accepted through June 21.
