Youth Connection hosts annual after-school fair

Event helps those getting ready to head back to school

DETROIT – The Youth Connection 12th Annual After-School/Back-to-School/Off-to-College Fair is set to happen on Saturday, August 17, 2013, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Belle Isle Casino.

The one-day event features many activities to get kids ready to go back to school with vendors that showcase after-school programs, information booths on health topics entertainment and fun giveaways -- backpacks, school supplies, bike helmets and books. Plus, it's free to attend and all ages are welcome.

In addition to the free giveaways and activities, several organizations will be available for parents to do one-stop shopping for their needs.

The event will feature enrollment options for after-school program providers. The Children's Hospital will also be on hand to distribute information about child safety.

According to studies, after-school programs contribute to overall development and education. The 12th Annual After-School Fair is a way to increase awareness about a wide variety of programs for children and youth.

Approximately 2,500 parents and children are expected to attend the event, along with elected officials and non-profit youth serving agencies.

Love Detroit Youth II will be hosting a 5K walk at 11 a.m. before the event begins. The walk is being held to raise awareness about substance abuse prevention for youth in Detroit.
