Ruth To The Rescue Gives Products A Try

How Did The Ove Glove, Star Tan And Chimney Log Perform?

POSTED: Monday, February 2,

It's called the Ove Glove and its maker boasts that it can withstand temperatures up to 480 degrees. Ruth to the Rescue took the Ove Glove straight to the ovens at Astoria Pastry Shop in downtown Detroit.

The commercial ovens operate all day long baking treats at an average temperature of about 400 degrees.

Ruth to the Rescue believed it was the perfect place to put the Ove Glove to the test.

The glove is made up of the same materials used to protect firefighters -- Nomex and Kevlar by Dupont.

The bakers at Astoria use the glove and told us what they thought. We heated a baking sheet for 10 minutes at 450 degrees then pulled it from the oven using the Ove Glove.

Our Ruth to the Rescue producer was able to hold it comfortably for nearly a minute. We tried the same thing with a towel, which is what they used at Astoria. She could barely hold the pan for 15 seconds.

In another test, a 60-watt light blurb burned continuously for more than five hours. We were able to hold onto it with the Ove Glove.

Ruth to the Rescue gave the Ove Glove a thumbs up. It passed our test and it's easy to use.

It is pricey, at about $12 a glove, but it's a good value because it won't wear out, and even if it's exposed to an open flame, it won't catch fire, so it's great for backyard barbecues.

Star Tan

It's called the 15-minute tan and its makers say StarTan the height of tanning technology.

Using an airbrush, Annie St. John said she can apply a beautiful streak-free and healthy looking tan in a matter of minutes that will last for five to 10 days.

"It all depends on how a person's skin exfoliates. But it'll last like a normal tan, it just colors the top layer of the skin," said St. John.

Is it safe?

Ruth to the Rescue took StarTan to Local 4 fitness expert Peter Nielsen's gym in Southfield to see if it would pass or fail.

The Star Tan takes five to eight hours to really set in. So according to StarTan, after the initial application, users should get even darker.

StarTan maintains that it's safe, but what do dermatologists say?

"There have not been reports of any serious adverse effects from these. It's probable they are fine," said Dr. Kathryn Sussman, a dermatologist at Children's Hospital of Michigan.

Two people who tried the tans said they are happy after three days with the tan and more importantly, they say they are still tanned.

Brian said his result was just a slight tan.

"Overall, I'm happy with the product," he said.

Jannine was a little less enthusiastic.

"The first night it was pretty good, but by morning it didn't seem like anything," she said.

Though the pair had different opinions, one thing was conclusive: The tans didn't become darker and they didn't last five to 10 days as the maker claims, according to Ruth To The Rescue.

Chimney Log Test

Every year, there are nearly 7,000 chimney fires in the United States, with losses totaling more than $31 million for homeowners.

Experts say you can protect your family from fire by keeping your chimney clean, but can you reduce the danger to your home and family by burning a special log?

The Chimney Sweeping Log, as the television advertisement says, "could save your home, your family and your life."

The manufacturer says that if you burn a couple of these log in your fireplace, it will rid your chimney of a hazardous build up called "creosote."

If you're burning wood and haven't had your fireplace cleaned regularly, experts say the creosote is building along chimney walls and is a real fire hazard.

Brian Miller of London Fog Chimney Sweeping, Livonia, inspected the chimney before using the Chimney Sweeping Log.

The instructions on the Chimney Sweeping Log, say burn the two logs for the best results, so that's just what Ruth to the Rescue did.

The manufacturers claim that even after the logs burn out the smoke will continue to loosen the creosote the chimney.

When Miller returned to check the chimney we tested a few days later, he said the creosote had been lifted a bit, but the Chimney Log had not rid it of the build up.

To rid the chimney we tested of the creosete. Miller attacked the job the traditional way with vacuums and brushes.

Both the fire department and the professional chimney sweep agreed that consumers shouldn't rely on the Chimney Sweeping Log to keep your home safe from chimney fires. In fact, the listing on the box claimed the product has been tested for consumer safety only, not for cleaning ability.

Ruth to the Rescue gives the chimney sweeping log a sooty thumbs down.

  • The Ove Glove passes our test because it is easy to use and it does keep you hands safe from very hot temperatures. The Ove Glove kept its promise.

  • The Star-Tan fails. Although it safe to use, it didn't last as long as the company claimed.

  • And finally, the chimney sweeping log also failed our product test, we found that the best way to clean your chimney is the traditional way.
