DETROIT -

Jeep CEO Mike Manley was eager to show off the 2014 Compass and Grand Cherokee Monday in front of an army of journalists and colleagues at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Manley’s presentation was set up by a short video focusing on Jeep’s cutting-edge philosophy: satisfaction belongs in the rearview mirror. Jeep’s popular line of compact SUVs was showcased with an emphasis on versatility and what every Jeep owner wants: the freedom to drive through pretty much anything with power and performance, but without sacrificing comfort.

Manley admitted Jeep’s return to its top position among sports utility vehicles in North America was not a gift they needed not work toward. Jeep had to climb from 5th position among its competitors. Manley recalled Jeep’s success in the 1990s and promised the 2014 Grand Cherokee, with its unmistakable powerful design, would secure the company’s top spot.

The sleek exterior design of the new Grand Cherokee does recall the tough-look Cherokees of the past, but adds an even more luxurious approach to the trail-rated SUV. Although the exterior may have that tough, unbreakable appearance, the interior may be the most luxurious of its kind yet.

The Grand Cherokee might prove power and rugged performance do come in compact packages. And despite the vehicle’s tough, stubborn look, the Grand Cherokee seems fit for any red carpet.

Manley asked the crowd to listen closely as its quiet diesel engine purred beneath the background noise at Cobo Center. As the crowd tried to listen, few probably heard much other than the sound of smiling Jeep enthusiasts, eager to hop inside and take it, well, wherever.
