For many people of a certain age memories of Good Humor ice cream probably make your mouth water. Sadly, that was then and this is now.
Consumer Reports had its taste testers rate frozen treats and the nostalgic favorite did not do well. More on that in a second.
First, a note about the study. The experts put 21 strawberry fruit bars, chocolate-covered ice cream bars, and ice cream sandwiches to the test.
They found the best options have flavors of real fruit, vanilla, and chocolate. The lower-rated options have drawbacks like artificial-tasting flavors and gummy or chalky texture.
Here are some of the highlights from the Consumer Reports ratings.
Among fruit bars: "365 Everyday Value" from Whole Foods was rated excellent. Consumer Reports found it had large chunks of fruit and a big, fresh strawberry flavor.
Whole Fruit, Dreyer's/Edy's and Blue Bell are very good, though CR said they could be slightly gummy.
Best Ice Cream Bars
Two of the most delicious names in the ice cream section came out on top when it comes to ice cream bars. Häagen-Dazs and Dove are rich, with strong dairy and vanilla tastes and a flavorful dark-chocolate coating. The Häagen-Dazs ice cream is especially dense; Dove has a thicker chocolate coating. The coating of Julie's Organic has a cocoa note and is slightly chalky.
Here's where Good Humor ran into trouble. Consumer Reports found the bars sold in stores have a thin, waxy, crumbly coating over ice cream flavors of artificial vanilla and a hint of wooden stick. Ouch!
Best Ice Cream Sandwiches
Walgreen's Old Fashioned might be a surprise top choice. The CR taste testers found it's the only tested sandwich that does not taste of artificial flavors or have a gummy texture. Instead, they found its wafers are soft and cakelike, with big cocoa flavor. CR found the sandwich from Skinny Cow to be the worst of those tested.
