Ruth to the Rescue conducts price check on Detroit Tigers gear

DETROIT – Detroit Tigers fans are living the high life with the home team win of the 2012 American League Championship.

"I think its going to bring a whole new life to the city," says Janet Ploeger, a Tigers fan and grandmother from Carlton, Michigan.

"It's good to have our home-team make it so far," says Tigers fan, Sarah Keenan.

Now comes the time to celebrate in the local style. but how much money will you have to put out? Ruth to the Rescue hit the pavement to find the best championship-inspired T-shirts and memorabilia

Shopping Stadium-Side

The official Championship T-shirts--worn by the team--were temporarily sold out of at Comerica Park's The D Shop the morning after the win. Ruth to the Rescue found the store selling the locker room T-shirts for $35 and one championship hat for $42.

Some fans have traveled across the country to stock up on the official Tigers merchandise.

"We're taking telephone calls from Florida to figure out what everybody want," says Florida-based Tigers fan, Charles Cox.

Around the Corner

Even with high level of excitement, savvy shoppers aren't pitching away their common sense. Some would rather find the their championship gear at a lower price, checking price tags in addition to labels.

"I'm stunned by the price," says Bruce "Joe" Macklyn of the high pricing at some of the stores.

Macklyn was found browsing for orange, navy blue and white at Gameday, around the corner from the stadium in Detroit's downtown.

Gameday has the official championship shirt priced at $25 and has found at least one appreciative shopper.

"If I got 25, 30, 40 bucks, I'll be back for a T-shirt. I might even be back for a jersey," says Macklyn.

Discount Deals

At Meijer in Allen Park, Ruth to the Rescue found Tigers fans who appreciate a good discount.

"Just looking for good value, low price, and hopefully stuff in their sizes," says Allen Park father, David Rowe, in buying for his two, young sons.

Though Meijer doesn't have the official T-shirt donned by the Detroit Tigers in the lockerroom celebration, it does offer a version of the championship T-shirt is $16 and a hat for $14.

"The price and as long as it says something about the Tigers, World World Series--that's all I'm all about," says Redford fan, Liz Lach.

Before You Buy

If you want official Major League Baseball merchandise, take a look at these tips from Major League Baseball:

• Look for the hologram sticker or holographic hangtag and a sewn-in label or screen printed notice identifying a licensee that has been authorized by Major League Baseball Properties to produce "official" licensed merchandise.

• Shop at MLB-authorized retail locations, such as the Official Team Store and MLB.com, the official web site of MLB - rather than buying items from itinerant street vendors, flea markets, or other questionable sources.

• Beware of ripped tags or irregular markings on apparel.
