Nestle, Heshey in peanut butter cup battle
Get ready for a showdown between two giant candy companies.
Nestle is about to offer new competition to Hershey's popular Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Nestle will roll out its own Butterfinger Peanut Butter Cup in 2014. It would be the most radical twist on the 90-year-old Butterfinger.
"The peanut butter cup is America's favorite candy," says Jeremy Vandervoet, brand manager for Butterfinger told USA Today. "This is the first time the peanut butter cup will change." Next year, customers will be able to find the Butterfinger crunch crumbled up inside some peanut butter.
However, executives at Hershey told the newspaper they're not worried about the competition. They say Reese's sale topped $1.5 billion last year. No other domestic candy brand topped $1 billion in sales, according to Nielsen.
The launch of the new product will include advertising in the upcoming Super Bowl. The add will play in the second half of the game. The new slogan for the new product will be, "The cup just got crunchy."
Nestle also offered these tasty tidbits on its new candy combination.
Nestlé BUTTERFINGER® Peanut Butter Cups will be available in retail stores nationwide in January 2014.
