Walnuts, garlic powder recalled over salmonella risk

Trader Joe's and Frontier Co-op Initiatives are both recalling products over a salmonella risk.

Trader Joe's Company is recalling raw walnuts because the products could possibly be contaminated with the harmful bacteria salmonella. The recalled raw walnuts were distributed nationwide.

Frontier Co-op is recalling products made with organic garlic powder because of potential salmonella contamination. The recalled goods are sold through its Frontier and Simply Organic brands, as well as the Whole Foods Market brand. Products containing the organic garlic powder were sold nationwide and to distributors in Canada.

Anyone who purchased the recalled products is being told to dispose of them or return them for a full refund. No complaints of illnesses have been reported from the recalled products, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Salmonella can cause fatal infections in children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of salmonella can include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Association. In rare occurrences, the bacteria can also cause arterial infections and arthritis.
