Dehumidifier recall re-announced as more problems arise

Federal regulators have re-announced a massive dehumidifier recall.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is taking the step because the reports of overheating Danby dehumidifiers, fires, and property damage have continues to climb since the recall was first announced in September of 2013.

Ruth to the Rescue showed you how Local 4's Ruth Spencer has to check the dehumidifier in her home back last fall. Her model was not affected, but the recall does affect 2.5 million units in the United States.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says reports of units overheating have increased nearly 400 percent. The number of reported fires has increased from 46 to 121. Property damage reports have doubled from $2.15 million do nearly $4.5 million. For all those reasons, regulators want to remind consumers to check their dehumidifiers if they haven't done so already.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says if you have any of the dehumidifiers affected by the recall, you should stop using it, unplug it, and contact Gree for a refund.

The dehumidifiers were sold at HH Gregg, Home Depot, Kmart, Lowe's, Menards, Mills Fleet Farm, Sam's Club, Sears, Walmart and other stores nationwide and in Canada, and online atAmazon.com and Ebay.com, from January 2005 through August 2013 for between $110 and $400.

There are numerous brand names affected, including GE, Frigidaire, and Kenmore to name a few.

Earlier this year, Ruth to the Rescue brought you the story of a couple who was having trouble getting a refund from Gree. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says its encouraged Gree to speed up that process. If you run into problems with a refund, you should contact the commission for assistance.
